My home is my Coffee Bean

Coffee Bean is the twin of Starbucks. One is as beige, brown, cozy, jazzy, “regular ultimate ice blended coffee with two shots, skim milk, without cream …” ridiculously American as the other and although I have not googled background information, I assume that one does as much fair trade as the other.

If I could come anyhow close to the ideal me, I would not be a regular customer in those places. Too tacky, too American, way overpriced, not environmentally justifiable, and so not cool…

But if I come home after a long day at work, had a long quarrel with the tuk-tuk driver over the right price, passed estimated 87 heavily armed soldiers, got in 2 check points, saw that the street dogs had opened my garbage bags and distributed the rotten ingredients all around the entrance of my house attracting more dogs, crows and insects in uncountable numbers (…) it is like taking my happy pill to go around the block into the one and only Coffee Bean in town, where 5 waiters shout joyfully “Hello, how do you do, how can I help you?” already the moment you enter through the door, where French Chansons and American Christmas songs force you into an annoyingly joyful mood, where everything is sugar-coated and polished, where there is free internet (that works!) and coffee that comes closer to coffee than anything else in this country.

That is HOW UNCOOL I AM.

If I will continue to live all around the world I will soon have to add international Coffee Shops to my list of refuges. Like churches and hotel lobbies. You can not always choose your refuge, I guess.

If I'll ever

I wonder if I'll ever have as much fun with my new flat mate as with Hannah...? And if we will ever recognize us wearing other clothes?

My new home

There it is. A real Sri Lankan beauty and my new home for the next.... hmmmm....
